Usability Testing & Analysis for EHR SUS

EHR 2017

Goal

This was performed to meet MACRA requirement for certifying EHR systems.

My Role

I was researcher on this project including design of the study and author of this report.

I moderated more than half of the test sessions and trained UX team members to moderate when I was unavailable. I reviewed all session recordings prior to acceptance of a session into the study.

Overview

Summative research is underrated by some.

I did this particular study to satisfy a requirement the EHR system had to meet to earn a specific certifications, however, studies of this depth on any system, with our without the fancy report, gives Prod & Dev teams, executives and other stakeholders an idea of where the products rank in “user friendliness.”

If you are ranking similarly to (or worse than) products in the same domain, you know you have a problem. And you can use this type of evaluation to set a "baseline" use it to later rate the efficacy of your product evolution by using the data to measure the impact of changes to your users' perceptions of the products.

In some cases, work like this can also improve the safety of your product – in the medical space, that's imperative; both because it's legally required and because it's the right thing to do.

Findings

The final report includes study method, participant info, and recruiting practices and is documented according to the standards laid out in the Affordable Health Care Act of 2009. Guidelines for this study can be found though Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) for conducting and reporting on usability studies for EHR Systems.
